Quick answer
Yes. The GI Bill covers trade and vocational programs that are approved for VA benefits. VA calls them non-college degree (NCD) programs and gives examples like HVAC repair, truck driving, EMT and beautician school. It also covers approved apprenticeships and on-the-job training, where you earn wages while VA pays a monthly benefit. [VA: Non-college degree programs] [VA: On-the-job training and apprenticeships]
What VA pays under the Post-9/11 GI Bill
Your share of tuition and housing depends on your eligibility percentage, set by your length of service. Check your remaining benefits on VA.gov. [VA: Check remaining Post-9/11 benefits]
Two ways to learn a trade on the GI Bill
School program (NCD)
A certificate or diploma at a community college, technical center or private trade school. VA pays tuition to the school; you can get a monthly housing allowance if you train more than half time. [VA: Non-college degree programs]
Apprenticeship or OJT
A job with an approved employer or union program. You earn wages; under Post-9/11, VA adds a housing payment that steps down every six months. [VA: On-the-job training and apprenticeships] [VA: Post-9/11 GI Bill rates]

Does the GI Bill pay a housing allowance for trade school?
Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you can receive a monthly housing allowance (MHA) based on the Defense Department's Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents at the ZIP code where you train. You must train at more than half time to receive it, and it is not paid while you are on active duty.
Does the GI Bill pay for apprenticeships?
Yes. VA lets you use the GI Bill for approved on-the-job training and apprenticeship programs. You earn wages from the employer, and VA pays a monthly benefit on top. Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill you can also get up to $83 a month for books and supplies.

Which GI Bill is better for trade school, Post-9/11 or Montgomery?
It depends on the school's cost, where you train and your eligibility. Post-9/11 pays tuition to the school plus a ZIP-code-based housing allowance; the Montgomery GI Bill pays a flat monthly amount directly to you (for example, $2,601.00 a month full time at the 3-year rate from Oct 1, 2026). Compare both with the Comparison Tool before you choose, because the choice can be irrevocable.
